Spooky Halloween Tablescape Ideas for Dinner Parties and Get-Togethers
Build a spooky Halloween tablescape layer by layer, with tablecloths, cheesecloth runners, glowing centerpieces, flameless candles and skeleton serving pieces.

There's something special about sitting down to a Halloween dinner. Maybe it's a family meal before trick-or-treating, a costume party buffet or a moody dinner for friends. Either way, the table is where everyone gathers, so it deserves a little haunting. The trick to a great tablescape is building it in layers: a base, a centerpiece, light, serving pieces and a few small surprises. Here's how to put yours together with two weeks to go.
Choose Your Mood First
Before you pick a single piece, decide how spooky you want to go. It makes every other choice easier.
- Gothic and moody. Black lace, black gauze, skulls, candlelight and deep orange. Perfect for grown-up dinner parties.
- Playful and bright. Cheerful ghosts, pumpkins and colorful lights. Great for family dinners and kids' parties.
- Witchy. Cauldrons, green glow, little witches and purple accents. Fun for a potion-themed party.
You can blend them, of course. A gothic table with one silly centerpiece is a great conversation starter.
Layer 1: The Base
Start with what covers the table. It sets the color palette for everything else.
For a bold, printed look, the Pumpkin and Castle Ghost Halloween Tablecloth comes in 60 x 84 in or 60 x 120 in. It's machine washable polyester, so spills from the punch bowl aren't a disaster.
For texture, add black cheesecloth. The 10 ft Black Cheesecloth Halloween Table Runners, 8-Pack are sheer and lightweight, and each one is 120 in long, so they drape naturally over the ends of big tables. Bunch the gauze loosely down the center, or lay two or three runners across the table width for a tattered, abandoned-manor look. With eight in the pack, you can dress the buffet and side tables too.
Layering tip: Put a solid or printed tablecloth down first, then add the gauze on top. The pattern peeks through the sheer fabric for a spooky, cobwebbed effect.
Layer 2: The Centerpiece
Your centerpiece should be the first thing people notice, but low enough that guests can still see each other across the table.
- Bubbling cauldron. The 10.6 in Black Witch Cauldron with Green Bubble Light glows with an eerie green light. Fill it with wrapped candy or props, or use it as the anchor of a potion station.
- Lighted trees. The 2-Pack 24 in Lighted Black Halloween Trees glow in orange and purple and come with 12 creepy eye ornaments. The branches bend, so you can shape them to suit your table. Place one at each end for balance. They run on USB or batteries and have a 6-hours-on, 18-hours-off timer.
- Little witches. The 4-Piece Miniature Witches and Light-Up Cauldron Set puts three resin witches around a mini cauldron with a green LED glow. It's a charming little scene for the middle of a smaller table.
- Soft glow ghosts. The Light-Up Ghost Pumpkin Decorations, Set of 3 are handmade, come in three sizes and have an on/off switch on the bottom. No setup needed.

Height tip: Keep anything in the center of the table under about 12 inches, or use tall, slim pieces at the ends. Nobody wants to peek around a centerpiece all night.
Layer 3: Candlelight
Candlelight is what makes a Halloween table feel magical. Flameless candles give you that glow without an open flame near gauze, costumes, kids or pets.
The Flameless Flickering Taper Candles, Set of 4 are real wax with a flickering flame effect, plus a remote and timer. Tapers add instant elegance to a gothic table. For scattered sparkle, the 12-Pack Halloween Spider LED Tea Lights are flameless and battery operated.
Want holders with personality? The Set of 6 Black Glass Jack-O'-Lantern Tealight Holders each fit a standard tealight, so their carved faces glow. Drop a battery tea light inside, line them down the runner and you have a row of little pumpkins lighting the way. The Gothic Black Iron Pumpkin Candle Holder adds intricate pumpkin detail and a classic black finish, and it works just as well for a moody fall dinner next month.
Lighting tip: Dim the overhead lights and let the candles and centerpiece do the work. Set timers so everything glows as guests arrive.
Layer 4: Serving Pieces That Double as Decor
On a Halloween table, the serving dishes can be part of the show.
- The Halloween Skeleton Candy Dish with Pumpkin Bowl is a grinning skeleton in a top hat holding a pumpkin bowl for wrapped candy. The hat opening fits a flameless candle.
- The 8.7 in Resin Skull Candy Dish and Serving Tray holds candy and snacks, then moves to the entryway to catch keys after the party.
- The Resin Skeleton Holding Skull Serving Tray is molded as one piece, with a skeleton cradling a skull-shaped dish. Fill it with candy or appetizers.
- The 4-Cavity Skull Ice Cube Mold freezes four grinning skulls to bob in punch, soda or cocktails. It includes a sealing lid and a filling funnel.

Layer 5: Small Surprises
The final layer is the fun stuff guests discover as they sit down.
- Place-setting ghosts. Tuck one of the 10-Piece White Ghost-Shaped Soy Wax Candles at each seat as a take-home favor.
- Cheerful accents. The Set of 3 Wooden Ghost Tiered Tray Signs are painted in bright colors with pumpkin, cat, bat and broom details. They're perfect for a kids' table.
- A candy jar for the sideboard. The Vintage-Style Purple and Black Witch Candy Jar adds retro style to the dessert spread.
- A glowing sign. The Light-Up Pumpkin Wooden Table Sign tops off the buffet or bar cart.
